Can you tell a lab grown diamond and a natural diamond apart?
Simply put, you can’t. The molecular formulae of natural and lab grown diamonds are exactly the same. They are both made from the same carbon atoms, arranged in an identical, precise formation to create what you and I know as the diamond. Due to this, they both have identical optical properties. In other words, they both exhibit the same brilliance, fire and scintillation.
Even the keenest, most experienced of eyes will struggle to tell them apart. Experienced jewellers can use specialised equipment, and conduct an analysis to tell the two apart based on specific spectroscopic properties, which in no way can be seen by the naked eye.

If they are the same, why are lab grown diamonds less expensive?
The price difference between lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds has little to do with difference in quality. On average, you can expect a lab grown diamond of identical cut and carat to be approximately 1/3rd the price of a natural diamond. But why?
The difference is completely owing to the way in which diamonds are sourced. Mined diamonds are formed over millions of years, 200 km below the earth’s surface, and it takes some incredibly heavy equipment to obtain it. On the other hand, lab grown diamonds only take a few weeks to form, and all you need is an advanced laboratory.
Moreover, natural diamonds must be transported from mines to different places through several middlemen, to be processed, cut, distributed and finally, sold. Alternatively, lab diamonds can cut transportation costs since a range of these processes can all be conducted in the same lab.
These differences in cost are rightfully passed down to you, such that you can pay less for the same exact diamond.

Are lab-grown diamonds sustainable?
Yes! Reducing the number of steps involved to obtain them, as well as having complete control over the laboratory equipment ensures that we are actively reducing our carbon footprint. Mining has a negative effect on local biodiversity and is far less regulated than a lab, producing unwanted emissions and harming the environment.
Although laboratory processes require high energy, the production is being optimised daily and is becoming increasingly sustainable and ethical. You can be sure that you are helping the planet when you opt for lab-grown diamonds as compared to natural ones.

Are lab-grown diamonds certified?
Yes! Similar to naturally occurring diamonds, there exist credible institutions which certify all our lab grown diamonds, and ensure that you have the most accurate information about the diamonds you buy. More specifically, all our diamonds are graded by the IGI to provide you with details about the cut, colour, clarity and carat. Natural and lab-grown diamonds of the same 4 C’s are directly comparable with each other.

What is the difference between lab diamonds and moissanite?
It is important to note that lab-grown diamonds are simply diamonds born from a different source. On the other hand, moissanite is an inexpensive alternative to diamonds, with a completely different molecular composition. These are known as diamond simulants and exhibit different physical and optical properties. Although gorgeous in their own right, it is easier to tell moissanite and diamond apart with the naked eye, when the light reflections are directly compared.
Are all lab grown diamonds flawless?
Similar to natural diamonds, lab diamonds can also contain impurities known as inclusions. Just like mined diamonds, they can vary in quality of cut, color and clarity depending on production processes. However, you can be sure that you will have all the necessary information about your diamond through its IGI certificate.
How will the value of lab grown diamonds vary in the future?
Be it lab grown or naturally mined; any gemstone’s resale value can vary over time unpredictably. What’s more important is that you make the decisions that’s right for you about which diamond you will cherish and love wearing every day, without having to worry about its future value.
How will the quality of a lab grown diamond change over time?
Since lab grown and natural diamonds are chemically identical, they will also have identical wear and tear. Lab diamonds are just as strong and stable, and will not get cloudy over time. For more instructions on how to care for your lab grown diamonds, explore our Knowledge Centre.
