Diamond Carat

The CARAT of the lab diamond is probably the most talked about C ever. The biggest contributor to its price, the carat in simple words, is the unit weight of the lab grown diamond which directly affects its size.

Where did the word ‘Carat’ come from?

Lab grown diamonds are sold in terms of carats, a unit of measurement usually associated with diamonds. The word carat comes from carob seeds which were usually used to flavor livestock feed. These seeds were so uniform that they were deemed fit to measure gemstones to a logical degree and were used as counterweights. These seeds lay the groundwork for the modern day word ‘carat’, which is often referred to as the most accurate unit of weight.

As explained by the Gemological Institute of America on their website, “A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. This allows very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. A jeweler may describe the weight of a lab grown diamond below one carat by its ‘points’ alone. For instance, the jeweler may refer to a diamond that weighs 0.25 carats as a ‘twenty-five pointer.’ Lab grown diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. A 1.08 carat stone would be described as ‘one carat eight points.”

Why does the carat of a lab grown diamond affect its price drastically?

The reason behind this is fairly simple. Much like onions don’t come pre cut to save you a few tears similarly lab grown diamonds don’t come precut to save you a few bucks. The lab diamond we are trained to think of is a tiny product of a huge rough stone that has been worked on with care. These rough stones are fairly simple in tiny sizes which are then cut into lab diamonds of a smaller carat weight. But for lab grown diamonds with a heavier carat weight it is only natural to find a huge rough stone that can be worked upon. These huge rough stones are quite rare and result in a costlier diamond.

Does a heavier carat weight make the lab diamond look bigger?

Interestingly, bigger might not always be better. A lab grown diamond with enough carats to last a lifetime but with a compromised cut might appear smaller than the bill that it came with. Allocating a perfect mix of the 4Cs is a sure way to ensure that your lab grown diamond looks its finest while within your budget.

The carat of a diamond has long been portrayed as a status of wealth, love and prosperity. And the relation between these is undeniable, but don’t let it hamper your amazing taste. There are numerous ways to achieve a fuller looking ring than just splurging on the carat of the lab grown diamond, one of which is the setting of your stone. The setting can make a huge impact on the perception of your stone. The halo setting is the easiest way to achieve a bigger looking ring because it surrounds your man-made diamond with a halo of usually the same shape as your diamond, which adds to the overall size of the lab diamond while staying classy and fabulous.

So keep in mind to look beyond the weight and into the cut and shape that accents your jewelry best!

Fun Tip

Certain carat weights are much more in demand than others, blame it on the ease of saying or the habit of rounding off. So if you are in the market for a one carat lab grown diamond, a 0.99 carat stone will also serve your purpose look wise while being considerably cheaper than the whole number, which costs a whole lot more.

And as Bruno Mars says “Don’t fight the feeling, Invite the feeling” because we are bringing the 24 karat magic right to you (but for far less than the price of 24 karats)!
